Learning Meditation – Where to Go

Learning Meditation

If you’re new to meditation the first thing that comes to mind is the lotus position so prevalent in natural health magazines and websites.  This sitting posture could be challenging for some, and to get a good idea of how you do it correctly you may need to read up about it or visit your local ashram, martial arts center, or yoga studio.

Such places may combine Far Eastern-based practices that include meditative positions or mental training techniques with their main offerings. Other places such as hindu temples, community colleges or YMCA’s may have learning programs or meditation classes. Some courses may even offer such techniques as mindfulness meditation or pregnancy yoga.

Most courses should be affordable and within commuting distance of most cities, others may cost more than expected and be located across the country. Seems like its a good idea to look around first before taking on a new technique.

Since many meditation techniques seem to stress the correct posture and positioning of the hands and proper alignment of the spine, along with verbal sounds or humming, its a good idea to get more information before trying the practice of meditation all on your own.

However, if you are able to teach yourself some of these techniques, before you start allow yourself to contemplate what you are after and how that goal is specific to you. One thing for sure start with a simple goal. We all can benefit from establishing stillness in the mind and increasing receptivity, clarity and a  better attitude.

While your own research of the techniques offered may come from different sources of information, your quest for information can only broaden your options and eventually give you a meditation technique best suited for your personality,  life circumstances and aspirations.

Here are some sources we came up with that we thought were interesting enough to mention:
