ADD and ADHD Challenges Young Drivers

Driving and ADHD are Hard to MasterIn a recent New York Times article, attention deficit disorder, (ADD), and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are reported to be keeping some of those who have this condition from getting their drivers license.

Adding to the challenge of owning personal transportation, or getting a license to drive are the reduced job and educational opportunities from not being able to drive a vehicle.

It is plausible from this new finding that some mental training and patience are needed for those who have ADHD to stay present and keep focused on any task, including driving. Being employable and staying productive in a modern economy, to some degree still depends on physical mobility.

So what happens when you or someone you know cannot get a drivers license due to your ADD /  ADHD symptoms?

The New York Times’ John O’Neil explores this issue in his article, ADD and ADHD Challenge Those Seeking Drivers License

Excerpt:

” A 2007 study, by Russell A. Barkley of the Medical University of South Carolina and Daniel J. Cox of the University of Virginia Health System, concluded that young drivers with A.D.H.D. are two to four times as likely as those without the condition to have an accident — meaning that they are at a higher risk of wrecking the car than an adult who is legally drunk.”
